How to play Movie Night
Seven categories. Name one matching film in each. A less-covered title earns more points.
Take your first shot
- Press Start. The category and its 25-second clock appear together.
- Type a film title and press Enter or Lock it in. Add a year in brackets for remakes: Title (1999).
- A recognised title locks the round. If it matches, you earn 25–100 points. A known film outside the category, Pass or timeout earns zero.
- Read the reveal, explore accepted examples if you like, then move to the next category. Seven perfect rounds earn 700.
A constructed example
Suppose the category asks for a film released in the 1990s. Toy Story (1995) fits; Toy Story 3 (2010) does not. This example is a lesson, not today’s answer.
Actor prompts use recorded cast and voice-actor facts. The current edition verifies the full available Wikidata cast, including for films in the offline bank. Offline snapshot matches remain usable when known; missing appearances need online verification. Source coverage can be incomplete, so an unrecorded supporting appearance may remain unverified.
Spelling, remakes and time
As you type, matching titles and close spellings appear below the box. Choose a suggestion to fill the title; it does not submit your answer or restart the clock. Common sourced aliases, accents and punctuation are accepted. Unknown titles stay editable while the same clock runs; ambiguous titles ask for a year. Online search checks the wider Wikidata movie catalogue, including titles outside the offline bank. Choose the correct release year. If a film or required fact cannot be verified, you can keep editing while the same clock runs; a lookup failure is not a wrong answer. The clock continues when you refresh or leave the tab. The next category waits for you to press Start.
Online search and privacy
Online search sends your typed movie query to Solve Meadow’s server and Wikidata to find matching releases. Queries do not enter optional analytics. Public film facts and hashed search keys are cached on our existing hosting. Your daily progress and result stay in this browser. Known positive snapshot matches and title/year categories can still work when online verification is unavailable; incomplete offline credits never prove a wrong answer.
What does “rarer” mean here?
The offline bank contains 794 sourced films. Wider online answers use the same fixed Wikimedia sitelink scoring thresholds. Fewer linked editions receive more points. Fixed 20/40/60/80/90 percentiles create 100/85/70/55/40-point bands; the remaining films score 25. Ties receive the same score. Every selected category includes a 100-point answer.
This measures catalogue coverage, not real-player answer frequency, box-office success or worldwide popularity. Search covers films indexed with sufficient facts in Wikidata; it cannot guarantee every film ever made. The original scoring bank favours films with substantial Wikimedia coverage and does not represent all cinema equally. Genre, cast, director, country and language categories use recorded facts. An accepted online answer keeps its source revision and facts with your local result, so restoring that result does not change its score. Release-year categories use the earliest sourced release year.
Daily play and practice
The full-facts M3 edition uses the same deterministic seven-category schedule, changing at midnight UTC. Earlier saves remain separate: M1 screening or M2 screening. Your first completed daily result stays in this browser. Practice uses separate seeds and never replaces that score. There is no account, server leaderboard or cross-device sync; clearing browser data removes saves. Local scores are personal play records, not tamper-proof competition.
Share your screening
Share copies your date, score, round marks and link. Film titles and category answers are omitted. A practice share includes its seed so a friend can play the same screening.
